- The Legacy Collection: The Lion King is a two-disc soundtrack featuring the songs from the original motion picture soundtrack, 30 minutes of previously unreleased score, and liner notes by Don Hahn and Academy Award-winning composer Hans Zimmer.
- Walt Disney Records recently announced The Legacy Collection, a new line of releases that celebrates milestone anniversaries of beloved soundtracks. The first soundtrack to get The Legacy Collection treatment will be The Lion King, releasing as a two-disc set on June 24, 2014.
This album is part of Walt Disney Records' “The Legacy Collection” which are a series of compilation albums for various Disney movies – in particular, more of the score is made available for the first time. Usually the entire score is not released on official soundtracks and is instead cut into what I suppose you could call more “palatable” chunks, as not all of a movie’s score is particularly exciting when taken out of context.

While the previous official soundtrack release was mixed by Jay Rifkin, composer Hans Zimmer chose Alan Meyerson to mix the score for this release. The result is that parts of the score previously omitted are now present and existing pieces now sound slightly different as previously barely-heard elements have been brought forward. Some songs also flow better on the album as their lead-ins from the score are now present.
On June 24, 2014, The Legacy Collection: The Lion King was released, with the track having been remixed but released under its initial title, 'Stampede'. In the film This version of 'Stampede' does not include the entire composition heard in the finalized version of the score. Interestingly, a complete score for The Lion King was unofficially released as a bootleg back in the early 2000s. It is unknown who found and released the material. The album featured the complete score by Hans Zimmer as well as alternate versions of some pieces. As it was a bootleg, the quality varied. Disney are very hot on their copyright, and it has been speculated that the bootleg complete score somehow prompted the company to release an official expanded soundtrack as The Lion King was the first album they released in this series.
